My name is Tom, I am 9 years old, and that day, a Saturday, I am invited to Lily's house. We are sitting at the kitchen table for a snack.
- The new chocolate your mom buys is so good, I say, devouring it with bread in my mouth.
- Mmmmmm, Lily replied with her mouth full.
- What?
- I said I love it too, she added once she had swallowed her bite. I tasted it at my cousin's house and since then mom buys it too.
Lily and I are childhood friends and we spend a lot of time together, almost all of our free time. Our parents have often asked us to try to make other friends, but we get along so well that we have never felt the need. Since then, they have stopped asking us.
Living in a semi-detached house, it has always been very easy for us to see each other, even on rainy days.
I have known Lily for so many years that I don't even remember our first meeting. Certainly she doesn't either. Our parents, who are also friends, often have gatherings at one or the other's house and we generally have great evenings or barbecue afternoons that only end late at night.
This year, we were in the third grade and we celebrated our 9th birthday together. We are really looking forward to our departure to my grandma's because summer vacation has arrived and we are starting to get bored.
- I can't wait to leave, I say.
- Me too, Lily replied, after all this time you've been telling me about your grandparents' house, I can finally experience it, not just from what you tell me when you come back.
- Yes, it's so cool that you're coming, you'll see, we'll do lots of things. I'll show you the treehouse, we can go fishing, I'll introduce you to my friends who also live there.
- Just one more week to wait.
- Plus my parents won't stay, and that's cool, I say. With grandma, we can stay up late and if one night we don't shower, she doesn't say anything.
- Well, I know you don't mind not showering for a day, but I still like to! Lily said, laughing.
I didn't want to talk to Lily about it, but the last time I went to grandma's house, last year to be exact, I wet the bed, twice even, and she wasn't too happy. I hope she has forgotten. I admit I am a little worried. Not that Lily knows because I know she wouldn't make fun of me, but more about my grandma. I wouldn't want my vacation with Lily to go bad because of that, but well, for the past 6 months I haven't had any accidents, so it should be fine.
- Do you remember the time you came to sleepover at my house and you wet the bed? I asked Lily.
- I don't remember, but that's the story my parents like to tell. Why are you bringing that up again?
- Just because.
I made a little mistake asking Lily that, but it's true that the story is funny, at least, it's a memory I like to remember. Lily had come to sleepover at my house. She didn't wet the bed at that time. That night, she wet the bed and my parents had put one of my diapers on her for the rest of the night, because yes, I still wet the bed and wore diapers. Her bed being wet, she slept between my parents for the rest of the night. We were maybe 6 years old at that time.
Lily has never made fun of me, even though I had to wear diapers at a slightly older age than average, and that's one of the things I've always appreciated about her. That, plus the fact that we have several things in common! We love sports, board games, wrestling on the carpet in my room, and not all girls like to do that!
- Tom! Lily's dad calls from inside the house.
- What?
- Your mom wants you to come home, she says you haven't finished your summer homework.
Darn, that's right, I forgot about those. I don't like doing them and my parents buy them for me every year.
- I hope I won't have to take them, I say to Lily as I get up.
- I'll help you, I love it.
Lily is a very good student in class, and even though I'm not bad either, homework has always annoyed me.
- Thanks Lily, you're so kind. I have to go, see you tomorrow.
I know mom doesn't like it when I linger, so I quickly give Lily a kiss on the cheek and hurry home.
- See you tomorrow, Tom.
